When exploring the subject of self-care, most people focus on a person’s physical needs and mental state. Those areas are important, but the emotional side of you is important as well, and love is one of the strongest emotions in the human experience.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, not everyone has a spouse or significant other to spend their life with, but most people have someone in their sphere of influence that they interact with, if only once in a while. Some of those people genuinely care about you, so do not forget to acknowledge them during this season of love. Family members, friends, co-workers, members of associated groups… all the people in your sphere are in need of expressed love and appreciation, and you need theirs, too.
Did you know that love has a language? In his book, “The Five Love Languages,” Gary Chapman discusses how to discover what your love language is. Five different categories of love languages are listed: words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service and physical touch. We suggest reading this book to understand what your love language is.
Show Your Sphere You Care
It may be impossible to find out the love language of everyone in your sphere of influence, but that doesn’t stop you from showing love in your love language. If you are one that enjoys words of affirmation, send someone a text telling them all the good things you like about them. Maybe your love language is gift-giving; send a simple greeting card in the mail. If acts of service are how you convey love, run an errand for a friend. Doing so will not only make the other person feel better, it will lift your spirits. You never know, your show of care and consideration just might be reciprocated.
