In September, some people celebrate National Self-Improvement Month. This is a time to reflect on one’s own achievements and set some new goals, or revive old ones. It is imperative that we look for ways to be strengthened and invigorated so we can be our best selves for our family, our friends, our coworkers, and most importantly, for us.
We at Edgar’s Bath Goods want to pose a different idea about self-improvement. This is the idea of giving to others to help our own well-being. Being charitable or volunteering your time to help someone else in need can actually help improve your physical and mental state of being.
Cleveland Clinic has an article about this very subject. In the article, they state, “A smile isn’t the only reaction that comes from gift-giving. There’s also a chemical response that takes place in your body in response to … well, just doing something nice.
As you help someone or give a gift, your brain secretes “feel good” chemicals such as:
- Serotonin (which regulates your mood).
- Dopamine (which gives you a sense of pleasure).
- Oxytocin (which creates a sense of connection with others).
“When we do things for other people, it makes us feel much more engaged and joyful,” says Dr. Albers. “That’s good for our health and our happiness.”
The article also boasts the benefits of being charitable:
- Lower blood pressure
- A longer lifespan
- Less stress
- A helper’s high, which can help fight against depression.
You can find many ways to give to someone else other than donating money. Give a homeless person a bottle of water on a hot, summer day. Volunteer at a local shelter. Find out about ways to help and volunteer in your city (at the library, special events, etc.)
Our parent company, Goodwill North Central Texas is all about creating a better local community, and one way you can help someone else is to clean out your closet and storage area and donate the items to your nearest Goodwill location. Your generosity helps so many people with job training, skills training, providing a safe place to interact with others, and the list goes on.
And, if you can spend a little money, go ahead and buy your neighbor or mail carrier a luxurious bath bomb from us at Edgar’s Bath Goods! They smell absolutely wonderful and leave your skin feeling soft and cared for. We have eight different scents to try. Buy one, or all 8, and show someone you care about them. They will feel good, and you will benefit as well.
Here’s to your well-being!
