Just like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day can be a bittersweet time of memories and reflection. It is a time of appreciation as we acknowledge the one who worked hard and sacrificed to provide for us. The holiday began with a woman named Sonora Smart-Dodd, someone who simply wanted to celebrate her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own. President Richard Nixon made the holiday official in 1972 and sanctioned the third Sunday in June to honor our fathers.
